We continued to practice L’article partitif working on two more sheets including the vocabulary of the food. Then we worked on Cross word puzzle ( the vocabulary of the animals and colors).

Speaking part involved Q & A from our Warm up sheet and another oral execice “Nous allons à la chasse au cerf ! – Nous avons peur des cerfs !

Also a fun oral game: Il y a une mouche dans ma soupe..alternating the vocabulary based on Unité 11.

Homework: make sure Le cahier d’activités is finished up to the page 45 and study for the test Unités 7-9.

Galette des rois

Après toute l'excitation de Noël et du Nouvel An, il reste une dernière tradition française intéressante : le tirage des rois. Cette célébration a lieu à l'Épiphanie, dont la date n'est pas figée - elle peut être soit le 6 janvier, soit le premier dimanche de ce mois.

Plus intéressant encore, il y a la galette des rois. Ce gâteau particulier se mange généralement tout au long du mois de janvier. Selon la région, la galette des rois se fait de plusieurs façons : elle peut être feuilletée ou briochée, certaines sont fourrées à la frangipane, et d'autres décorées de fruits confits. Mais ce qui distingue la galette des rois des autres gâteaux, c'est la fève à l'intérieur, voire deux : une vraie fève, et souvent aussi une figurine ou un petit bibelot.

Pendant le tirage des rois (la découpe de la galette), la personne qui tire la fève (c'est-à-dire, qui la trouve dans sa part de galette) devient roi ou reine, reçoit une couronne en carton (fournie par la boulangerie) et choisit son compagnon. J'ai tant aimé les fèves que j'ai trouvées dans ma première galette (chez une amie) et ma deuxième galette (chez moi) que j'en ai acheté une troisième - mais ils avaient oublié d'y mettre la fève. Quelle déception !

Three Kings' Cake

After all the excitement of Christmas and the new year, there's still one more interesting French tradition: the "pulling of the kings." This celebration takes place at Epiphany, which has a variable date - it can either be 6 January or the first Sunday of the month.

Even more interesting is the galette des rois (literally, kings' cake). This special cake is generally eaten throughout the month of January. Depending on the region, the cake comes in different varieties: it can be made of puff pastry or like a brioche, some are filled with almond paste, and others are decorated with candied fruits. But what sets the galette des rois apart from other cakes is the fève inside, or even two: a real fava bean, and often a figurine or small knickknack as well.

During the tirage des rois (the cutting of the cake), the person who pulls the fève (that is, who finds it in his/her slice of cake) becomes king or queen, receives a paper crown (provided by the bakery), and chooses a partner. I liked the fèves that I found in my first galette (at a friend's house) and second galette (at home) that I bought a third - but they'd forgotten to put the fève inside. What a disappointment!
